The oil used in the engine and transmission of Yamaha's Virago 750 touring bike came in two flavors, one used when the outside temperature was above 40 degrees F and the other for use below 40 degrees F. The front forks used SAE 10 single viscosity oil and the cables and pivot points used SAE 10W-30 oil. Chain drive models used lithium EP-2 grease; shaft drive models' final gear oils were divided by the magic 40 degree mark.
The Virago 750's engine used SAE 10W-30 SE-SF oil when the outside temperature was at or below 40 degrees F. For temperatures at or above 40 degrees F, the 4-cylinder V-twin used SAE 20W-40 SE-SF oil. The final drive gears on shaft-drive bikes used SAE 90 GLA oil above 40 degrees and SAE 80 GLA oil below 40 degrees. SAE 80W/90 GLA was the all-weather oil for the final gears.
