Ford’s Modular engine, commonly referred to as the “Triton,” was first produced in 1991 and first installed in the F-150 in 1997. The powerful engine requires a durable transmission, and the best way to ensure that the transmission functions properly is to regularly change the transmission fluid. Fortunately, changing the transmission oil in a F-150 equipped with the Triton is a straightforward process.
Apply the parking brake and allow the engine at least 30 minutes to cool.
Place a container large enough to safely contain approximately 7 qts. of fluid underneath the pan on the bottom of the transmission.
Twist the drain bolt on the bottom of the pan in a counterclockwise direction with a socket wrench until the bolt detaches from the pan, then allow the transmission fluid to drain into the container.
Insert the transmission pan’s drain bolt into the pan, then twist the bolt in a clockwise direction with the socket wrench until the bolt is tight.
Raise the hood and withdraw the transmission’s dipstick.
Insert a long funnel into the transmission’s dipstick tube, then pour approximately 6 qts. of Mercon V-type transmission fluid into the funnel.
Turn the engine on and allow it to idle for approximately 30 seconds, then turn the engine off.
Insert the transmission’s dipstick into the transmission, then withdraw the dipstick and check the fluid level.
Add transmission fluid until the fluid level reaches the “FULL” mark on the dipstick.
