Although you will need a few special tools for a VW oil change you'll notice that the process is not much different than American made engines. One thing that late model Volkswagens have that many American vehicles do not is a plastic engine shield or shroud that protects the bottom of the engine from being damaged while driving and an oil filter that is difficult to reach.
The shroud that protects the undercarriage of late model Volkswagen engines is held in place by several Torx bolts. These differ from standard bolts as the head has a starred hole that requires a specialized tool that looks similar to a screwdriver for removal. The correct size Torx driver is a T-20.
The oil filter on late model Volkswagen engines can only be removed from below the vehicle. Often, the lower radiator hose prevents a mechanic form removing the filter by using the common oil filter wrench that uses a metal band. There simply isn't enough room. You must use an oil filter canister socket-type wrench in conjunction with a ratchet and extension bar to remove the filter.
The standard size for the oil filter drain plug on late model Volkswagens is 19 millimeters. A boxed end wrench or a socket can be used to remove the plug from the oil pan.
