You might know it as MSD Ignition, a company most famous for its line of ignition boxes, and in fact MSD stands for multiple spark discharge. Most companies would kill to have the market share that MSD has with its ignitions, distributors, and plug wires, but the same innovators who originally brought capacitive discharge and multiple spark technology to the automotive world are now turning their attention to new products perfectly suited for the four-wheel world, which is what prompted our visit.
MSD’s Atomic EFI makes it simple to end the off-idle stumbling common with carburetors
MSD’s Atomic EFI makes it simple to end the off-idle stumbling and elevation issues common with carburetors. It isn’t cheap, but the Atomic EFI can be installed in place of a standard square-bore carburetor in a day with minimal hassle. The throttle linkage from the carb will hook right up to the throttle body, and you don’t even need to run a return line to the fuel tank.
Following on the heels of the Atomic EFI, MSD introduced the Atomic LS for Gen III/IV Chevy engines. This uses similar CAN-BUS technology (Controller Area Network) to send multiple signals through one wire, thus simplifying installation. Atomic LS uses factory connectors but integrates all of the wiring into the fuel rails on top of each bank of the engine, making for a clean installation. As an added benefit, you don’t have to worry about retaining the factory computer or having it reflashed for your application since the Atomic LS allows you to use a handheld programmer to input your engine’s parameters, and then the ECU’s self-learning ability does the fine tuning.
