The First S550 Mustang Supercharger System From Vortech Kicks Out More Than 150 hp Extra to the Tires!

The 32-valve Coyote powering the all-new 2015 Mustang GT is the most powerful standard version yet, with 435 hp on tap. Even more is available via aggressive tunes, but we all know that will never be enough. We need superchargers! Vortech knows this and has been hard at work developing a new kit that not only cranks up the horsepower and torque but maintains factory style drivability and reliability too. Matter of fact, when you pop the hood it even looks factory, if you go with the Stealth Black Finish kit.

While the kit is totally DIY friendly, Vortech is very thorough with the kit’s designs, so there are quite a few detailed steps we’ll have to gloss over just for the sake of space. Also, we’re starting with the front of the car disassembled and the intake tract removed, so make sure you read over the extremely detailed instructions from Vortech on prepping and disassembling your car before a single part goes on. We’re just going show you the good stuff, and how much butt you’re going to kick afterwards.

1. Here’s the new kit from Vortech for the 2015 Mustang GT. The intercooled kit is designed to be a daily drivable bolt-on out of the box, but it is capable of race-level power if you prep the engine.

2. After the engine cover is popped off and the two foam blocks used for sound deadening are pulled, the fuel line gets disconnected on the driver side. Beware that there may a bit of residual pressure, so wrap a shop rag around the fitting.

3. After the injector harness plugs are pulled, there are four 10mm hex nuts holding the fuel rails to the intake. Remove those and the whole rail assembly with injectors will pull out.

4. Four injector rail spacers lightly pressed into the intake need to be pulled and swapped for the slightly shorter ones in the Vortech kit.

5. The stock injectors are 24-lb/hr, but we need more fuel for all the air the Vortech will push. A new set of 47-lb/hr EV14 injectors is included. Once they are pressed into the rails, everything gets reinstalled with a new set of four M10 X 90mm socket cap screws.

6. The bracket assembly that holds the head unit to the engine is actually a two-piece system that traps the idler pulleys. A little bit of grinding will actually be necessary for the leading edge of the valve cover for head unit clearance.

7. We skipped a few steps here, but don’t worry; Vortech’s instruction manual includes a very detailed exploded diagram of how this assembly bolts together with spacers and pulleys. All assembled with the belt routed, this is what the bracket looks like. This double bracket fights flex and keeps everything very rigid.

8. The supercharger comes prefilled with oil, so be sure to swap the shipping plug for the supplied vented plug, and check the oil level using the integrated dipstick when installing.

9. Clearance is tight for the inlet tube on the front of the head unit, so some minor clearancing may be needed.

10. The throttle body needs to be moved outward about an inch for clearance with the head unit, so Vortech includes this billet spacer.

11. The spacer also allows for the throttle body to be rotated 180 degrees since the gear case for the drive-by-wire throttle is simply too large.

12. With the front bumper cover removed and some bundles of wiring moved out of the way, there is a surprising amount of real estate available for the massive Vortech intercooler. It mounts using the factory bumper bolts.

13. The ambient air temp sensor will actually go back into its stock location after the install is complete.

14. The tube for the discharge side of the intercooler is a tight fit past the horns and may require the harness to be relocated to prevent rubbing.

15. Before installing the hot side piping on the intercooler, the bypass valve and its filter are bolted into place. Make sure that the opening of the valve faces rearward.

16. The vacuum source hose is plumbed into a T-split off from a hose on the intake.

17. After the elbow is installed onto the throttle-body, the MAF housing is slid into its new place. A block-off plate covers the original mounting position.

18. Mating the MAF tube and the outlet pipe from the intercooler is a snug fit through this opening behind the driver-side headlight, but once together it is a tailored fit.

19. Believe it or not, the stock air box will bolt right back into place and serve as the filter for the supercharger; though a few modifications need to be made, including removing the resonator chamber.

20. The last piece to the air tube puzzle is this snout that connects to the head unit. This is the piece that may require a slight amount of clearancing on the fan shroud.

21. These two factory check valves just above the throttle-body have factory hoses on the right, but the left side gets custom routing to plumb the PCV and vacuum system.

22. This fitting is threaded into the inlet tube from the air cleaner to the head unit.

23. A new coolant overflow reservoir is included with the kit since the intercooler pipes leave little room after the installation. Because of the relocation to the passenger-side valve cover, a couple of coolant hoses need to be modified and rerouted, including the upper radiator hose, which will be reversed.

24. All wrapped up, the Stealth Black Finish kit provide for a very nearly factory appearance that we really like. Also note, a slight amount of trimming is needed for the engine cover to clear the head unit.

25. After spending a few days on the dyno to establish the new tune that will be provided in the kit, the Vortech blown GT was good for 529 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. That’s in increase of 157 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque, and with a very smooth and linear torque curve! Check out the dyno chart.
