Difficulty Level: 4 out of 5

There are some pretty cool aftermarket oil and coolant catch cans available off the shelf but some situations call for something custom. In the case of our Datsun 620, we had an open spot next to the radiator to fill which inspired us to fire up the welder. Our goal was to create a custom dual catch can, half to catch the coolant overflow from the radiator and the other half to trap and contain oil from the crankcase. Creating the coolant side was simple; this just called for a sealed container with a fill hole, an inlet and an outlet (to dump any overflow). Our design for the oil side was more complex because we wanted to add a baffle to help separate the oil from the air, which can be beneficial, especially on a vacuum recirculation system. Although custom projects such as this take time to create, the experience can be rewarding and you’ll end up with a unique piece custom tailored to meet your needs.
