Or in our case, the book that Yamz continually brown-tags by bringing into the crapper. Well, Super Street isn't that cool yet. In fact, we're far from it. But that's never stopped us from trying before, and it sure isn't going to stop us now. The Ultimate SR20?
While we were at G-Dimension, James Chang wheeled out an engine that was still in a crate-literally. It was a full-race S14 block and cylinder head from Japan. "It'll go to 400 hp easy with the stock bottom end," James said. "And if the bottom end is a 2.2, 500 easy."
The head had undergone major intake port surgery, and more cutting had been done on the exhaust side. So much metal had been removed from the ports on both sides that you could actually see the valve stems through the ports. "When you can see the valves, you know you're flowing some serious air," noted James.
On top of the head was a full-boat Tomei valvetrain, complete with double-spring valvesprings and solid pivots and a pair of Tomei camshafts that spec'd out at 270 degrees of duration and 12.5mm lift. The factory's variable valve system had been ditched for a pair of adjustable HKS sprockets.
While the big cams will certainly help make power, the solid pivots are the real key to this engine's success, said James. By replacing the stock hydraulic lash adjuster pivots with the solid pieces, it's possible to set the lash tight enough so that the engine can spin to upward of 8,500 rpm without risking rocker arm bounce.
We asked James if he was planning to put this engine in his own drift Silvia, which was under construction in his shop. He shook his head. With the money he could sell this engine for-around $8,000-he'd do far better (fiscally, anyway) by selling it to a customer.

As is the case with any big cam swap on an S14, the factory variable valve system is tossed aside in favor of a more conventional (and in this case adjustable) sprocket. These gears are from HKS.
A view down the race S14's intake port. So much metal has been shaved away in the interest of high-speed airflow that the valve stems are clearly visible-something you'd never see in the stock head.
Look close and you can see the Tomei double-wound valvespring, needed to stand up to high-rpm flogging. What you can't see are the solid pivots that replaced the hydraulic lash adjuster pivots. Eliminating the hydraulic lash adjustment means you can spin this engine northward of 8,500 rpm in your quest for power.
