Everyone knows you should switch to a more aggressive maintenance schedule during extreme use, but not everyone knows that long winters can be just as abusive on an engine system as extreme hot-weather torture testing. Here are a few things to consider when dealing with harsh, long winters.
• Add some de-icer to the washer fluid. It'll help lower the freezing point of liquid and can clear light ice buildup.
• Cut your oil-change intervals in half if you don't drive many miles on a given day with temperatures hovering near zero.
• Stow an emergency kit in the car just in case you have to spend a prolonged period in cold temperatures.
• If there's a bad storm or frost headed your way, using de-icing spray on the windshield the night before can help keep things clear in the morning.
• Moisture is more likely to form in your gas tank during cold weather. If possible, keep your fuel tank at least half full.
