Human error causes 93 percent of all accidents, the NHTSA claims, and Daimler-Benz says 90 percent of rear-end accidents could be prevented with just 1.5 seconds’ advanced warnings. In response to these statistics, Mobileye has released their C2-170 driver safety system, a single-camera-based safety enhancement system designed to alert drivers of imminent threats and winner of the U.K.’s Fleet Safety Forum Award for Excellence 2009.

The Mobileye C2-170, which can be used on a wide range of vehicles, protects against three big threats: forward collisions, unintended lane departures, and insufficient following distances. Using the windshield- or dash-mounted EyeWatch1, the visual sensor unit monitors and screens the vehicle’s immediate surroundings, displaying high-intensity, color-coded visual icons on a dedicated screen to keep drivers in the loop. Drivers who deviate from safe motoring protocols are alerted by a loud buzzer.
“We’ve positioned the C2-170 as our flagship product for passenger vehicles, given its sleeker, more ergonomic aesthetics,” says Mobileye CEO Skip Kinford. “Considering the cost-effectiveness of its price point, the C2-170 is destined to be the popular choice for safety-conscious consumers.”

According to Mobileye, benefits of their system include:

Of course, the C2-170 should not be used as a substitute for proper driving technique and awareness. Nearly 80 percent of accidents are a result of driver inattention in the three seconds preceding the accident.
